GOA TOURS GUIDE

From miles and miles of sunny beaches, to the splendors of its quaint cities, towns and cobbled alleyways, Goa is more than just beaches and sunshine. It's also the charm and magic of toxic resorts, a verdant green countryside, lush green forests and abundant wildlife topped with the legendary warmth and hospitality of the Goan people. A truly exhilarating out of this world experience that only Goa can provide. Whether it's fun adventure, sunshine, spirituality or just plain relaxation, you don't need to look beyond the magical land of Goa.

GOA TOURIST INFORMATION :-
Goa is India's smallest state in terms of area and the fourth smallest in terms of population after Sikkim, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. It is located on the west coast of India, in the region known as the Konkan, and is bounded by the state of Maharashtra to the north, and Karnataka to the east and south. The Arabian Sea makes up the state's west coast. Panaji is the state's capital, and Vasco-da-Gama (Vasco) its largest town. Portuguese merchants first landed in Goa in the 16th century but soon after colonised it. The Portuguese colony existed for about 450 years, until it was annexed as part of India in 1961. Internationally renowned for its beaches, Goa is visited by hundreds of thousands of foreign and domestic tourists each year.Besides beaches, Goa is also known for its world heritage architecture including the Bom Jesus Basilica. Goa also has rich flora and fauna, owing to its location on the Western Ghats range, which are classified as a biodiversity hotspot.

GOA HISTORY :-
Goa had long flourished as a port, particularly under the military protection of the Vijayanagar commander Madhav Mantri, who managed to protect Goa from the acquisitive Muslim sultans. In the 1470’s however, Goa finally succumbed to the Muslims and was ruled by Adil Shah of Bijapur. Then in 1508 Alfonso de Albuquerque arrived from the Portugal and captured the port, a victory that led to 450 years of Portuguese rule.It is the Iberian aura, the cultural alloy of Latin and Oriental, the coexistence of Hinduism and Christianity that epitomizes the distinct identity of Goa. The Portuguese invested a hitherto predominantly Hindu society with their religion, attitudes and lifestyles, and Goa’s ethos and élan are the consequences of this encounter. Like the stained-glass windows on the churches, Goa’s fabric is a mosaic of bright and variegated colors - the flamboyant designs of Latin exuberance set against the russet hues of traditional Indian attitudes and lifestyles.

Most domestic airlines operate in Goa apart from chartered private airlines operating from UK and Germany. Indian Airlines has direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai daily. Air India also flies to Goa.

By Rail - It is not difficult to reach Goa by trains, especially after opening of the Konakan Railway that connects Margao and Vasco da Gama to major cities in India. You can take trains from Delhi 1,874 km), Mumbai (490km), and Bangalore (430 km) to reach Goa comfortably. From the railway stations, you can hire taxis and motorcycle taxis to reach the desired destinations.

By Road - Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka state transport corporations operate from the Kadamba bus stand at Panaji. Frank Shipping operates a boat service between Mumbai and Panaji.
Moving around in Goa is quite easy. A unique experience is that of the motorcycle taxi. Several ferry services are also available.

GOA FAIRS AND FRSTIVALS :-
Fairs and festivals are celebrated with traditional gaiety and fervor to invoke divine blessings as well as for the sheer joy of living. A celebration of life at its best.

Festa dos Reis : Epiphany celebrations include a procession of young boys decked out as the Three Kings. The procession goes to the Franciscan chapel of Reis Magos, near Panjim, 3 km east of Fort Aguada. Other processions are held at Candelim and Chandor. It is celebrated on January 6th.

Shantadurga Prasann : The Hindu festival of Shantadurga Prasann is celebrated with much gaiety and fanfare at the small village of Fatorpa, south of Margao in January. There is a night procession of chariots bearing the goddess and as many as 100,000 people flock to the festival. The Shri Bodgeshwar Yatra or temple festival takes place just south of Mapusa.

Shigmo: Holi in Goa is celebrated as Shigmotsav, which is a festival of farewell to winter and welcome to spring celebrated with colour, songs and dances to the beat of drums. Float parades depicting various scenes of mythology are also held.

All Saints : On the fifth Monday of Lent, twenty-six effigies of saints, martyrs, popes, kings, queens and cardinals are paraded around the village of Velha Goa, near Panjim. A fair also takes place.

Sanjuan : The festival of St John is celebrated all over Goa on June 24th, but is especially important in the coastal villages of Arambol and Terekol. Youngsters torch straw dummies, representing St John's baptism and thus the death of sin, while revellers get wilder as they consume feni.

Christmas : Like elsewhere in the world, December 25 is celebrated in Goa too as the nativity of Jesus Christ with traditional joy and gaiety. In fact, it cuts across the limits of the Church to spill over into the streets for all to participate. It is a time for merry-making and exchanging gifts in Goa, for Christmas is also about cakes and puddings.

GOA BEACHES :-
The state of Goa in India, was a Portuguese colony until 1962, and is famous for its Indo-Portuguese culture and architecture. Goa's beaches reflect its colourful mosaic of history. As you vacation in Goa and feel the soft sand beneath your feet, you'll find that there is no place like a warm, inviting beach in Goa to make you feel at peace with the universe. Goan beaches are magnificent and you will find them extremely difficult to leave. The only problem is which one to head for.

GOA SHOPPING :-
The excellent local handicrafts of Goa are easily the most popular souvenir items and include brassware, terracotta, shell work, crochet, carved furniture, bamboo work, papier-mache, etc. These are available in the Government Emporia and also at shops and stalls near the popular tourist spots.Another item which is on the list of every traveller to Goa is a pack of the famed cashew nuts. These are available practically everywhere. The nuts are available in a wide variety of tastes ranging from plain, salted and masala. The prices vary based on the quality and flavour. It is also a fascinating experience to go around and shop in the traditional markets of the Goan towns and villages. These markets are a mirror of Goa's ethnic culture and provide a glimpse of the typical Goan way of doing business. Two of the most famous market areas are Mapusa and Anjuna. The Friday Market at Mapusa, where stalls sell everything from curios and old coins to dried fish and spices. The Wednesday Market at Anjuna Beach started by and for foreigners is an extremely lively spot where souvenirs, beachwear, trinkets and handicrafts are sold at bargain prices. The charm of shopping in Goa lies in bargaining to your heart's content in markets and shops until you finally bring down the price and make the purchase a worthwhile experience.

GOA ENTERTAINMENT :-
Trip to Goa reveals that the nightlife in Goa is exciting and is plushed with variety of options for the amusement of tourists. In certain areas, almost every third house has a bar-cum-restaurant. The place may not be anything special, usually just a room in the house that has been opened to the public with a couple of chairs and a table. But the atmosphere is great - totally relaxing and extremely conducive to an enjoyable night out with friends and family. You will find on your trip to Goa that most of the places serve exquisite seafood and other Goan delicacies and have well stocked bars. The hottest place to visit and to be seen at in Goa today is Titos which is right on the beach. There's also a new discotheque 'The Beachotheque' where you can dance the night away. Or you could check out Lidos in Dona Paula. But if you are in the mood to dance to the rhythm of the ocean, get together a group of our friends, some food and drink and hit the beach. You are sure to have a special night on your trip to Goa with the sand the moon and the pounding waves!
