MYSORE TOURS GUIDE

Mysore, formerly known as Bombay is the capital of the
Indian state of Maharashtra and is the most populous
Indian city. Mysore is located on Salsette Island off
the west coast of India. The city, which has a deep
natural harbour, is also the largest port in western
India, handling over half of India's passenger traffic.
The appellation Mysore is an eponym, etymologically
derived from Mumba — the name of the Hindu goddess
Mumbadevi, and Aai — meaning mother in Marathi.
Mysore, the capital city of the Wodeyars has always
enchanted its admirers with its quaint charm, rich
heritage, magnificent palaces, beautifully laid-out
gardens, imposing buildings, broad shady avenues and
sacred temples. There's an old world charm about the
city that reaches out and leaves no one untouched.
MYSORE TOURIST INFO :-
Mysore is the second largest city of the Indian state of
Karnataka. Mysore is the administrative seat of Mysore
District and
Mysore Division, and is the former capital of the
Kingdom of Mysore. Mysore is known as the Cultural
Capital of Karnataka.
Mysore is located at 770 m above sea level and 135 km
from Bangalore at 12.18° N 76.42° E. Mysore is known for
its
palaces and proximity to several attractions. One of the
best (some would say worst) times to visit Mysore is
during the
annual nine-night, ten-day Dussera or Dasara or
Navaratri festival, which usually occurs in early
October.
MYSORE HISTORY :-
The history of Mysore has been closely linked with the
history of the Kingdom of Mysore. References from the
times of
Mahabharata and Asoka refer to Mahisha Nadu or Mahisha
Mandala. References can also be found in Tamil
literature about
Ezimahi Nadu. Earliest documentary evidence is linked to
stone carvings (Saasanas) found in villages around
Mysore,
inscribed around 1021. From 1499 the name of Mysore has
been clearly recorded in inscriptions. Till the year
1610, when Srirangapatna was acquired, Mysore was the
center of administration. It became the capital of the
Kingdom
of Mysore after the death of Tippu Sultan in 1799. The
administrative center was shifted to Bangalore in 1831,
as the British
took over the administration of the Kingdom of Mysore.
Mysore once again became the capital of the kingdom in
1881
with the rendition of power by the British to the
Wodeyars. Most present day historical landmarks, and
organisation
of the city of Mysore were inspirations of the Wodeyar
kings and their Dewans. Plans for organised development
of the city
exist as far back as 1904. Several structures were built
around late 1800's and early 1900's.

MYSORE FAIRS AND FESTIVALS :-
Fairs and festivals are celebrated with traditional
gaiety and fervor to invoke divine blessings as well as
for the
sheer joy of living. A celebration of life at its best.
Dussehra : The pride of Mysore's festivals is Dussehra.
It is a celebration that lasts for ten days. The rulers
of Vijayanagara
Empire used to celebrate Dussehra with remarkable
brilliance. The rulers of Mysore continued the
tradition. The Maharaja
of Mysore used to hold a Durbar for 9 days and on the
10th day went in a procession on a caparisoned elephant.
With the
ending of the royal rule, a picture of Bhuvaneshwari,
the patron goddess of Karnataka, is taken out in
procession. It is
a unique and significant festival of the Hindus.
Hampi Festival (Vijaya Utsav) : The ruins of Hampi come
alive with the strains of music and sounds of dance when
the State Government holds the Vijaya Utsav to recreate
the grandeur of the erstwhile Vijayanagar Empire and a
bygone era.
Similar festivals are held at Halebid, Pattadakal,
Karavalli and Lakkundi. Other district festivals are
held in consultation
with the District Commissioners of different Districts.
Vairamudi Festival : The sleepy town of Melkote comes
alive during the annual Vairamudi festival when the
deity of the hill shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu is
adorned with the legendary diamond-studded crown brought
from the Mysore Palace.
This nightlong event, part of the 10-day Brahmotsavam,
is witnessed by thousands of devotees.
MYSORE SHOPPING :-

Mysore is a shopper's paradise. In addition to the
beautiful Mysore crepe silk sarees, sandalwood oil and
soaps, the city
is famous for sandalwood and rosewood carved ivory
inlaid handicrafts and toys, agarbattis (incense sticks)
and the
delicious Mysore 'Pak'. The main shopping areas are
Krishnaraja Circle, Devaraj Urs Road, Sayyaji Rao Road,
Ashoka Road and Dhanvantri Road.
MYSORE CUISINE :-
A typical Mysore meal is pure vegetarian cooked in
sesame and ground nut oil while the coastal areas have a
simple,
yet flavorsome cuisine with meat, fish and seafood
varieties cooked in coconut oil. The people in rural
Mysore prefer steamed
ragi balls served with hot chutney or 'huli', very
similar to Sambhar. Other popular Mysore specialties are
Mysore masala dosa,
Mysore pak etc.
MYSORE SILK :-
Mysore is famous for its Silk. Silk sarees and Magutas
are being traditionally worn since a long time, both on
religious and
auspicious occasions. Silk sarees come in a large
variety, the cost of saree depending upon the content of
gold in it. The
sarees are tastefully gold laced on its both edges and
the pallu which is wrapped over the body. Not only
private weavers
in well-known centres like Molakalmur and other places
but also the Government Silk Weaving Factory in Mysore
produce
excellent varieties of silk sarees, Magutas and ties.
The silk products of the Factory still commend wide
acceptability for
its genuine quality, gold lace and colour. Right from
taking out of yarn from the cocoon upto weaving the yarn
into colourful
garments takes place in Mysore. The Factory has a
show-room in its premises at the Manandavadi Road and
